Erst als Frankensteins Monster von den Menschen verstoßen und verraten wird, entwickelt er sich von einem liebevollen und fürsorglichen Wesen zu einer fürchterlichen Kreatur. Die Monstrosität, die auf ihn projiziert wird und die er schließlich performt, ist Ausdruck der Angst vor dem Un-Bekannten, dem Über-Natürlichen, dem Nicht-Normativen. Monster sind imaginative Vehikel für soziale und kulturelle Ängste, aber auch für intime und leidenschaftliche Sehnsüchte. Über gesellschaftliche Normen und Geschlechterkategorien hinweg, verwachsen mit Mythologie und Technologie, sind solche nicht-nicht-menschlichen Wesen uns unheimlich nahe – und doch außerhalb unserer Empathie.
In diesem Workshop wollen wir gemeinsam ein Vokabular monströser Empathie entwickeln. Durch kollektives Lesen und einen conversation score, der auf Lilia Mestres collection of scores beruht, werden wir die Monster beschwören, die wir in uns tragen, ständige Begleiter*innen, die wir fürchten und/oder lieben, vor denen wir weglaufen und/oder uns an sie schmiegen. Wir laden euch ein, Songs, Bilder, Texte und Erinnerungen mitzubringen, mit denen wir einen cadavre exquis bauen und ein monströses Mixtape zusammenflicken können. Gemeinsam möchten wir mit dem Diskurs der Monstrosität spielen, unser Verständnis von/für Monster öffnen und die Emotionen erkunden, die sie freisetzen können.
ANLEITUNG
Lisa Deml promoviert an der Birmingham City University und erforscht visuelle Artikulationen von citizenship und affektive Formen des Sehens in dokumentarischen Medien. Vor ihrer Promotion arbeitete sie für öffentliche Institutionen und Non-Profit-Organisationen, darunter das Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin, das Haus der Kunst, München, und Ashkal Alwan, Beirut.
Federico Protto bewohnt und belebt in seinen Arbeiten Zwischenräume, die die Bereiche von Performance, Musik, Kostüm- und Modedesign und künstlerischer Forschung durchdringen. Seine künstlerische Praxis umspannt ein hybrides Netzwerk von Kollaborateur*innen, Disziplinen und Materialitäten und beschwört die Geister mythologischer Vergangenheiten und Zukünfte, um Fragen unserer Gegenwart zu adressieren. Zurzeit lebt und arbeitet er in Brüssel, Belgien, und ist Teil des Postgraduiertenprogramms für künstlerische Forschung des Instituts a.pass.
TEILNAHME
Die Teilnahme am Workshop ist kostenlos. Es sind keine Vorkenntnisse erforderlich. Der Workshop wird je nach den Bedürfnissen der Teilnehmer*innen entweder auf Deutsch oder auf Englisch abgehalten; eine Übersetzung in die jeweils andere Sprache ist bei Bedarf jederzeit möglich.

Only when Frankenstein’s monster is rejected and betrayed by humankind does he turn from a kind and caring being into a frightful creature. The monstrosity that is projected onto him, and that he comes to perform, is an expression of fear of the un-known, the super-natural, the non-normative. Monsters are imaginative containers for social and cultural anxieties, but also for intimate and passionate desires. Transgressing societal standards and gender categories, entwined with mythology and technology, such non-non-human beings are uncannily close to us—and still beyond the scope of our empathy.
In this workshop, we wish to develop a shared vocabulary of monstrous empathy. Through collective reading and a conversation score based on Lilia Mestre’s score collection, we will conjure the monsters we bear within us, constant companions who we might fear and/or love, run from and/or huddle against. We invite you to bring songs, images, texts, and memories with which we can jointly assemble an ‘exquisite corpse’ and stitch together a monstrous mixtape. Together, we will play with the discourse of monstrosity, expand our understanding of monsters, and explore the emotions they can evoke.
INSTRUCTORS
Lisa Deml is a PhD candidate at Birmingham City University investigating visual articulations of citizenship and affective ways of seeing in documentary media. Prior to her doctoral research, she worked for public institutions and non-profit organisations internationally, including Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin, Haus der Kunst, Munich, and Ashkal Alwan, Beirut.
Federico Protto inhabits and invigorates interstitial spaces permeating the realms of performance, music, costume and fashion design, and artistic research. Spanning a hybrid network of collaborators, disciplines, and materialities, his artistic practice invokes the spirits of mythological pasts and futures to address questions of our present times. Currently, he is based in Brussels, Belgium and participates in a post-graduate program at a.pass for artistic research.
PARTICIPATION
Participation is free of charge. The workshop requires no prior experience or knowledge. The workshop will be held in German or English, depending on the participants’ preferences; we’ll be happy to translate to the other language if needed.
REGISTRATION
Due to a limited number of participants registration is required. Please make sure to be able to present valid proof of a negative test, vaccination or COVID-19 recovery on the day of the workshop.
